Grade 5 – Social Studies

Course Overview

The Grade 5 Social Studies course expands students’ understanding of history, governance, and civic responsibility while helping them recognize the connections between past events and present day society. As learners progress through the junior years, they develop stronger inquiry skills and begin evaluating multiple perspectives when examining social and environmental issues.

Students explore the interactions between Indigenous peoples and European settlers, analyzing how these encounters shaped Canada’s development and continue to influence contemporary communities. They also investigate the structure and function of government while learning how citizens and public institutions collaborate to address complex challenges.

Through research, discussion, and evidence based analysis, students strengthen their ability to think critically, communicate thoughtfully, and participate responsibly in an increasingly interconnected world.

Course Structure

Learning is organized into focused units that connect historical inquiry with contemporary relevance.

Interactions of Indigenous Peoples and Europeans

Students begin by exploring the relationships among Indigenous groups prior to European contact. They then investigate the motivations behind European exploration and settlement, examining how cooperation, conflict, and cultural exchange influenced the development of early Canada.

Learners analyze evidence, interpret maps, and compare historical experiences with present day realities. Through this process, students develop respect for diverse histories while strengthening their ability to evaluate cause and consequence.

The Role of Government and Responsible Citizenship

Students examine how governments function and how citizens contribute to a healthy society. They explore the rights and responsibilities associated with citizenship and investigate how public institutions interact with communities.

Learners also study Indigenous governance structures and consider how collaboration across leadership systems supports meaningful progress. By analyzing multiple viewpoints on social and environmental challenges, students develop informed perspectives and propose responsible courses of action.

Preparing Students for Responsible Global Citizenship

By the end of Grade 5, students demonstrate a deeper understanding of how historical events shape modern societies and how civic participation contributes to positive change. Their ability to analyze perspectives, evaluate evidence, and propose thoughtful solutions prepares them for more advanced studies in history, geography, and social sciences.
