Course Overview
The Grade 3 Language course represents an important milestone in students’ literacy development as they complete their primary language journey and prepare for the academic expectations of the junior years. Building on the strong foundation established in earlier grades, learners engage with increasingly sophisticated texts and media while refining essential communication skills.
Students explore a diverse range of literary forms including fables, plays, poetry, novels, informational texts, and media. These experiences strengthen comprehension while encouraging purposeful expression, creativity, and thoughtful interpretation.
As confidence in English continues to grow, students become more independent readers, more intentional writers, and more effective communicators.

Course Structure
Learning is organized into thoughtfully designed units that deepen comprehension while encouraging creative and purposeful communication.
Fables
Students read and analyze traditional fables while identifying central messages and narrative elements. They strengthen descriptive language skills and apply their understanding by planning and writing an original fable.
Non Fiction
Learners explore informational texts to recognize organizational features and author intent. Students examine media techniques, analyze point of view, conduct research, and express informed opinions through structured writing.
Letters
Students read various written forms and make meaningful connections to their experiences. Instruction emphasizes vocabulary development, pronoun usage, and sentence structure as learners compose, revise, and refine their own letters.
Poetry
Students engage with diverse poetic forms while practicing listening strategies and making connections to texts. They select precise language, incorporate descriptive elements, and publish original poems accompanied by media components.
Plays
Through dramatic texts, students strengthen reading fluency and expressive communication. Learners identify essential information, use vocal techniques effectively, and write their own plays while applying proofreading strategies.
Media Texts
Students investigate how media messages are created and interpreted. They analyze purpose and audience, identify communication techniques, and design their own media text while reflecting on its effectiveness.
Novel Study
Students read an extended narrative and practice making inferences supported by textual evidence. They explore character perspectives, apply active listening strategies, and produce a structured book report accompanied by a complementary media piece.
Presentations
Students explore the purposes of oral communication and develop effective presentation strategies. They incorporate visual supports, select appropriate language, and use verbal and nonverbal cues to engage their audience while reflecting on their progress as speakers.
