Grade 3 - Social Studies - Trinity Ontario Global Academy

Grade 3 – Social Studies

Course Overview

The Grade 3 Social Studies course marks an important transition as students begin engaging with historical inquiry and regional geography in more structured ways. Building on earlier explorations of community, learners develop a deeper understanding of how past events, environments, and human decisions shape the societies we live in today.

Students examine First Nations, Métis, and settler communities in Canada between 1780 and 1850 while exploring how early settlements influenced both the natural environment and existing populations. They also investigate Ontario’s landform regions, patterns of land use, and the ways municipalities respond to human needs.

Through guided inquiry, students strengthen analytical thinking while learning to consider multiple perspectives with respect and thoughtfulness.

Course Structure

Learning is organized into meaningful units that connect historical understanding with geographic awareness.

Communities in Canada, 1780 to 1850

Students explore life in Canada during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries by examining First Nations, Métis, and settler communities. They compare daily life from this period with the present, investigate significant challenges, and analyze the responses developed by these communities.

Learners also examine relationships among different groups and consider how connections to the land influenced ways of living.

Living and Working in Ontario

Students investigate the interrelationship between natural environments, land use, employment opportunities, and municipal development across Ontario. They explore major landform regions and analyze how communities use resources to meet societal needs.

Learners assess the environmental effects of land and resource use while examining actions that help reduce negative impacts. These experiences encourage thoughtful consideration of sustainability and responsible decision making.

Learning Resources

As a fully online course, Grade 3 Social Studies does not rely on a traditional textbook. Students engage with digital tools alongside hands on materials that support inquiry and exploration.

Recommended resources include:

  • Audio recording tools
  • Access to a printer
  • A binder, folder, or notebook for offline activities
  • Household materials that support creative projects
  • Writing tools such as pencils and coloured pencils

These resources help translate complex ideas into accessible learning experiences.
