Grade 7 - Language - Trinity Ontario Global Academy

Grade 7 – Language

Course Overview

Grade 7 Language marks an important stage in students’ literacy development as they transition toward more advanced academic communication. Building on the strong foundations established in earlier years, learners expand their ability to interpret complex texts, construct well-supported arguments, and communicate ideas with clarity and intention.

Students engage with a wide range of literary, informational, and media texts while refining their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Through structured analysis and creative expression, they learn to evaluate multiple perspectives, recognize author intent, and respond thoughtfully to diverse forms of communication.

As intellectual confidence continues to grow, students become more strategic readers, more purposeful writers, and more effective communicators prepared for the increasing expectations of intermediate learning.

Important Information

  • Elementary courses do not require prerequisites
  • Ontario elementary programs do not issue transcript credits
  • Facilitated and independent learning pathways are available to support diverse learning needs

The course is designed to provide approximately 200 to 300 instructional hours, allowing students to develop literacy skills through both guided instruction and independent application.

What Students Will Develop

Throughout the course, students participate in rigorous learning experiences that promote analytical thinking, creativity, and communication.

Students will:

  • Apply advanced reading strategies to interpret complex texts
  • Analyze organizational patterns and evaluate how structure communicates meaning

These competencies support academic independence while preparing students for more sophisticated language study.

Course Structure

Learning is organized into carefully designed units that deepen comprehension while encouraging purposeful communication.

Text Formats and Writing Styles

Students explore a variety of text forms while applying effective reading strategies. They analyze technical and informational texts, examine organizational patterns, and learn how language choices influence meaning. Learners develop persuasive writing techniques and practise speaking skills through structured activities such as producing a writer’s pitch.

Speeches

Learners study influential speeches to understand purpose, audience, and presentation strategies. Students organize ideas around a chosen topic, support their point of view with relevant information, and deliver a structured speech using engaging language and effective vocal techniques.

Narratives

Students analyze diverse narrative forms and identify how text features shape storytelling. They write their own complex narratives, applying varied sentence structures, descriptive language, and editing strategies while strengthening reading fluency and comprehension.

Autobiographies

Through the study of autobiographical texts, students examine how authors communicate perspective and tone. Learners organize personal experiences chronologically and draft their own autobiography, refining their work through revision and reflection.

Non Fiction

Students engage with complex informational texts, including scientific and argumentative writing. They summarize key ideas, evaluate evidence, interpret media sources, and create original pieces such as persuasive broadcasts that demonstrate clarity and purpose.

Graphic Texts

Learners investigate how visual elements communicate meaning and influence audiences. Students analyze graphic novels, infographics, and comics before designing their own media texts supported by research.

Poetry

Students explore diverse poetic structures while experimenting with figurative language and stylistic elements. They draft, revise, and publish original poems and present their work using expressive speaking strategies.

Presentations

Students deepen their understanding of media messaging and presentation techniques. By evaluating advertising strategies and audience engagement, learners strengthen oral communication skills and develop a confident personal voice.

Learning Resources

As a fully online course, Grade 7 Language does not rely on a traditional textbook. Students use a combination of digital tools and practical materials that support active literacy development.

Recommended resources include:

  • A device capable of capturing written work
  • Audio recording tools
  • Access to a printer
  • A binder, folder, or notebook for offline activities
  • A dictionary
  • Paper and writing supplies
  • Fiction and informational reading materials
  • Newspapers, magazines, and varied media texts
  • Headphones for listening activities
  • Household materials that support creative projects

These resources help create an interactive environment where students engage meaningfully with language.

Teaching and Learning Approach

Our approach integrates the four strands of language learning: oral communication, reading, writing, and media literacy. Instruction combines structured guidance with opportunities for independent exploration so that students continue developing confidence alongside capability.

Key features of the learning experience include:

  • Exposure to increasingly sophisticated literary and informational texts
  • Integration of media analysis and digital literacy
  • Opportunities to draft, revise, and refine communication
  • Inquiry based discussions that strengthen interpretation
  • Activities that encourage critical thinking and creativity
  • Consistent teacher support that promotes academic growth

Students engage with multimedia content, interactive lessons, and blended learning experiences designed to accommodate diverse learning styles.

The course is supported by a learning coach who assists with technical aspects of the program and encourages productive participation in discussion based activities.

Preparing Students for Continued Academic Growth

As literacy skills advance, students gain the ability to interpret information critically, construct well-reasoned arguments, and communicate with increasing sophistication. These capabilities empower learners to engage more independently with complex academic material.

At Trinity Ontario Elementary School, every learning experience reflects the vision of Trinity Ontario Global Academy by combining academic excellence with character development and global awareness. Students complete Grade 7 Language equipped with the confidence, analytical skills, and communication strategies necessary for continued success across subject areas and future academic pathways.
