Grade 2 - Language - Trinity Ontario Global Academy

Grade 2 – Language

Course Overview

The Grade 2 Language course extends the literacy foundation developed in Grade 1 while guiding students toward greater independence and confidence in communication. Through meaningful engagement with literature and media, learners deepen their understanding of grammar, spelling, reading, and writing.

Students encounter a wider range of text forms, including traditional tales, poetry, dramatic readings, informational texts, and longer narratives. These experiences help learners refine comprehension skills while encouraging thoughtful expression and creativity.

As students continue strengthening their literacy abilities, they become more capable readers, more organized writers, and more confident speakers.

  • Organize ideas clearly for written communication
  • Apply listening strategies to enhance understanding
  • Express ideas effectively through speech and presentations
  • Identify perspectives within texts

These competencies support continued academic growth while fostering confidence, imagination, and critical thinking.

Course Structure

Learning is organized into thoughtfully designed units that promote skill development while maintaining high engagement.

Fairy Tales

Students explore the purpose and structure of fairy tales while examining narrative elements and character perspectives. They practice making predictions, drawing inferences, and organizing ideas before writing their own fairy tale and reflecting on their work.

Folk Tales

Learners engage with folk tales from a variety of cultures, strengthening reading fluency and comprehension. Students share personal responses to texts and apply the writing process to plan, draft, revise, edit, and proofread their own folk tale for a specific audience.

Non Fiction

Students read informational texts to identify purpose and audience while exploring key text features. They expand vocabulary, distinguish facts from opinions, investigate text patterns, conduct research, and compose their own non fiction writing.

Reader’s Theatre

Through performance based reading, students develop expressive reading skills while learning strategies for decoding unfamiliar words. They explore point of view, practice effective verb usage, and use vocal techniques to bring stories to life.

Poetry

Students examine poetic forms and stylistic elements to understand how language communicates meaning. They draft and refine original poems, apply editing strategies, and create a media component that enhances their message.

Media Texts

Learners investigate how media messages are constructed and interpreted. They explore audience responses, examine conventions used in media, create their own media text, and reflect on their development as communicators.

Novel Study

Students read an extended narrative while practicing inference and prediction skills. They analyze sentence structures, apply punctuation such as quotation marks, identify main ideas, and develop strategies for sharing thoughtful responses to literature.

Presentations

Students explore different purposes for speaking and learn techniques that support effective presentations. They apply punctuation rules, incorporate media tools, and use verbal and nonverbal cues to communicate with clarity and confidence.

Learning Resources

As a fully online course, Grade 2 Language does not rely on a traditional textbook. Students use a combination of digital tools and hands on materials to support active participation and creative learning.

Recommended resources include:

  • A device capable of capturing written work
  • Audio recording tools
  • Access to a printer
  • A binder, folder, or notebook for offline activities
  • Household materials for creative projects
  • Storybooks and supplementary reading materials
  • Learning tools such as dictionaries, highlighters, letter tiles, headphones, and basic craft supplies

These resources help create an engaging environment where students actively develop literacy skills.

Teaching and Learning Approach

Our approach combines structured instruction with opportunities for exploration so that students continue developing literacy in ways that are both engaging and purposeful.

Key features of the learning experience include:

  • A balance of direct teaching and inquiry based activities
  • Exposure to diverse literary genres
  • Integration of media and technology
  • Opportunities to draft, revise, and reflect on learning
  • Consistent teacher guidance that supports communication growth

Teachers play an essential role in facilitating discussions, supporting skill development, and fostering a positive learning environment where students feel confident in expressing their ideas.

Preparing Students for Future Success

As literacy skills advance, students gain the ability to interpret information more deeply, communicate ideas more effectively, and engage more actively in their learning journey.

At Trinity Ontario Elementary School, every learning experience reflects the vision of Trinity Ontario Global Academy by combining academic excellence with character development and global perspective.
