Grade 6 - Science and Technology - Trinity Ontario Global Academy

Grade 6 – Science and Technology

Course Overview

The Grade 6 Science and Technology course represents the culmination of the junior science journey as students prepare for the increased depth and analytical expectations of intermediate study. Building on investigative skills developed in earlier grades, learners explore complex scientific systems while strengthening their ability to question, analyze, and evaluate evidence.

Students examine biodiversity, electrical phenomena, flight technologies, and space systems while developing a deeper understanding of how scientific discoveries influence society and the environment. Through structured inquiry and applied learning, students begin thinking more critically about global challenges and technological innovation.

As independence grows, learners become more confident scientific thinkers who are capable of conducting investigations, drawing conclusions, and communicating their findings with clarity.

Important Information

  • No prerequisites are required for elementary courses
  • Ontario elementary programs do not issue transcript credits
  • Facilitated and independent learning pathways are available to support different learning needs

What Students Will Develop

Throughout the course, students engage in scientific experiences that deepen conceptual understanding while promoting analytical reasoning and responsible decision making.

Students will:

  • Investigate the diversity of living organisms and their ecological relationships
  • Understand how electricity is generated, transferred, and transformed
  • Explore the scientific principles that make flight possible
  • Examine Earth’s place within larger space systems
  • Evaluate the environmental and societal impacts of scientific advancement
  • Strengthen research, observation, and experimental skills
  • Communicate scientific ideas using appropriate terminology
  • Apply coding concepts to support technological understanding

These competencies prepare students to approach science with curiosity, discipline, and intellectual confidence.

Course Structure

Learning is organized into thoughtfully designed units that promote deeper inquiry while connecting scientific knowledge to real world applications.

STEM Skills and Connections

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics are integrated throughout the course to support interdisciplinary thinking. Students conduct investigations, design solutions, and communicate evidence based conclusions while exploring practical applications of scientific knowledge. Instruction also highlights contributions from First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities, recognizing the value of Indigenous scientific perspectives.

Biodiversity

Students investigate the characteristics of living organisms and learn how species are classified. Instruction emphasizes the importance of biodiversity in maintaining stable ecosystems and supporting human life. Learners assess human impacts on biodiversity and explore strategies for environmental stewardship.

Electrical Phenomena, Energy, and Devices

Students explore both static and current electricity while constructing simple circuits to understand how electrical energy is transformed into other forms. Learners evaluate how reliance on electricity shapes modern living and consider its environmental implications.

Flight

Students examine how the properties of air support flight and investigate the principles behind flying devices. Through applied learning, they assess the societal benefits and environmental considerations associated with aviation technologies.

Space

Students investigate the systems that shape our universe, including the relationships among Earth, the sun, and the moon. Instruction focuses on celestial movement, observable phenomena, and the scientific advancements that have expanded human understanding of space. Learners also evaluate the broader impact of space exploration on society and the environment.

Coding

Students analyze how coding influences everyday technology while designing programs that collect and respond to input. These experiences strengthen computational thinking and support problem solving across scientific contexts.

Learning Resources

As a fully online course, Grade 6 Science and Technology does not rely on a traditional textbook. Students utilize a combination of digital tools and hands on materials that support active investigation.

Recommended resources include:

  • A device capable of capturing written work
  • Audio recording tools when required
  • Access to a printer
  • A binder, folder, or notebook for offline activities
  • Basic materials for constructing models and experiments
  • Grid paper for scientific design
  • Household items that support inquiry based activities

These resources help create an engaging scientific environment where students explore concepts through observation, experimentation, and design.

Teaching and Learning Approach

Our approach blends inquiry based learning with structured scientific instruction so that students develop both conceptual understanding and practical skills.

Key features of the learning experience include:

  • Investigations that promote curiosity and analytical thinking
  • Opportunities to apply the scientific inquiry process
  • Integration of technology to support research and experimentation
  • Real world connections that enhance relevance
  • Collaborative learning experiences that strengthen communication
  • Consistent learning coach support that guides progress

Interactive lessons incorporate visual media, simulations, and applied challenges that help students translate theory into meaningful understanding.

Educators and learning coaches play an essential role in supporting students as they refine investigative techniques, evaluate evidence, and communicate scientific reasoning effectively.

Preparing Students for Intermediate Science

Grade 6 marks an important academic transition as students move from guided exploration toward more independent scientific inquiry. By the end of the course, learners demonstrate stronger analytical skills, improved scientific literacy, and greater confidence in evaluating complex ideas.

At Trinity Ontario Elementary School, every learning experience reflects the vision of Trinity Ontario Global Academy by combining academic excellence with character development and global perspective. Students complete Grade 6 Science and Technology equipped with the curiosity, discipline, and intellectual readiness needed for success in intermediate science and beyond.
