Grade 6 - Language - Trinity Ontario Global Academy

Grade 6 – Language

Course Overview

The Grade 6 Language course represents a significant step forward in students’ literacy development as they transition toward the expectations of intermediate learning. Building on the strong communication skills established in earlier grades, students use their knowledge and life experiences to engage with increasingly complex texts while expressing ideas with clarity, purpose, and confidence.

Learners complete creative, descriptive, and persuasive writing tasks while developing compelling presentations that reflect thoughtful analysis and structured reasoning. Through meaningful interactions with literary, informational, and media texts, students explore sophisticated topics, examine diverse perspectives, and strengthen their ability to communicate effectively in both formal and informal contexts.

As independence continues to grow, students become more strategic readers, more intentional writers, and more articulate speakers prepared for advanced academic challenges.

Course Structure

Learning is organized into thoughtfully designed units that promote analytical thinking, purposeful communication, and creative expression.

Scripts

Students explore dramatic texts while identifying purpose, audience, and point of view. They analyze key elements of scripts, draw conclusions, and make inferences before applying their understanding to write an original script.

Non Fiction Novel Study

Learners examine informational texts while identifying structural features and recognizing patterns in written and oral communication. Students build connections across texts and evaluate purpose and audience as they develop thoughtful book reviews.

Graphic Texts

Students investigate how graphic texts communicate meaning through visual and written elements. They evaluate audience response, analyze perspective using textual evidence, conduct research, and create an informative brochure that presents their findings effectively.

Poetry

Students analyze how figurative and descriptive language enhances meaning and engagement. They explore stylistic elements, evaluate poetic techniques, and compose original free verse poetry that is refined through revision.

Procedural Texts

Instruction focuses on the logical organization of ideas and the effective communication of instructions. Students practice active listening, evaluate communication strategies, and select appropriate formats to present information clearly.

Historical Fiction

Students analyze narrative elements to interpret both explicit and implied meaning. Emphasis is placed on recognizing text patterns, developing balanced viewpoints, and producing a polished historical fiction piece that demonstrates depth of understanding.

Presenting Texts

Students explore how media is produced and examine the characteristics of articles and news broadcasts. They evaluate how presentation techniques influence audiences and use evidence to support their interpretations.

Persuasive Writing

Learners study persuasive structures and evaluate arguments from multiple perspectives. They practice using inclusive and precise language while constructing well supported arguments that communicate ideas effectively.

Learning Resources

As a fully online course, Grade 6 Language does not rely on a traditional textbook. Students utilize a combination of digital tools and hands-on materials that support active literacy development.

  • A device capable of capturing written work
  • Audio recording tools
  • Access to a printer
  • A binder, folder, or notebook for offline activities
  • A dictionary or thesaurus
  • A variety of fiction and informational texts
  • Writing materials and creative supplies
  • Access to diverse media formats
  • Headphones to support listening activities

These resources help create an interactive environment where students actively engage with language while developing independence.

Teaching and Learning Approach

Our approach integrates oral communication, reading, writing, and media literacy so that students develop a comprehensive understanding of the English language.

Key features of the learning experience include:

  • A balance of direct instruction and inquiry based learning
  • Engagement with increasingly sophisticated texts
  • Integration of research and media analysis
  • Frequent opportunities to draft, revise, and refine communication
  • Structured discussions that promote critical interpretation
  • Consistent learning coach support that encourages academic growth

Students engage with storylines, multimedia resources, and interactive activities that reinforce learning while building a strong foundation of literacy strategies for future academic success.

Educators and learning coaches play an essential role in facilitating discussions, supporting skill development, and fostering an environment where students feel confident expressing complex ideas.
